The Jenny Dawn Cellars team is extremely excited to share information about our two newest wines: the 2017 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Rodgers Creek Vineyard in Sonoma Coast. In July, our team traveled to our wine production facility in Napa to blend these wines and come of with the final taste profile. They are absolutely delicious and we are looking forward to releasing these wines to the public on November 1, 2018.
Are you familiar with the Rodgers Creek Vineyard? According to the San Francisco Chronicle it is considered one the of the "greater, lesser known vineyards in Sonoma Coast." Read ahead to learn more.
Rodgers Creek Vineyard
Location: In the Sonoma County hills between Petaluma and Sonoma
Size: 83.5 vineyard acres on 297 acres
Soils: Well-drained and complex, lots of volcanic tufa or ash
First planted: Around 2001
The Rodgers Creek Vineyard lies on the western flank of Sonoma Mountain at the southern end of the Petaluma Gap. This vineyard is Jenny Dawn Cellars source for both the 2017 Pinot Noir and Chardonnary. The wines are from two separate blocks planted almost twenty years ago at an elevation of 650 feet, subjecting the vines to the full force of the wind coming off the Pacific Ocean. The wind, coupled with the low fertility of the volcanic ash soils, limits the size of the canopy, producing small, intensely flavored berries with average yields barely over two tons per acre. The resulting wines are well-balanced with a mix of intense fruit and marked structure that express the character that is the signature of the Petaluma Wind Gap region.

The 2017 Jenny Dawn Cellars Rodgers Creek Chardonnay has moderate lemon yellow in the glass with silver highlights and aromas of rich ripe lemon, stonefruit, pineapple and pear supported with oak and subtle vanilla spice. Full and round on entry with ripe lemon, apricot and yellow apple, it gains texture and crispness on the mid palate with savory herbal notes along with toasted oak underpinnings. The finish is layered, crisp and complex with a touch of butter that fills the palate along with returning lemon and ripe stone fruit notes. This is a complex Chardonnay that features richness, texture and complexity from beginning to end.
We are absolutely in love with this wine. We are so excited for the community to try it! This wine pairs well with Goat Cheese Stuffed Figs, Antipasto platter and Strawberry Balsamic Crostini.
Showing classic Sonoma Coast character, the 2017 Jenny Dawn Cellars Rodgers Creek Pinot is full, complex, and textured. Despite its weight, it’s perfectly balanced and fresh from beginning to end. Including ripe black cherry and pomegranate fruit with sweet spice of vanilla and licorice, balanced by a mid-palate of savory tobacco and dried leaf elements with chewy tannins, its components interact nicely through a very long, clean finish with sustained fruit and spice notes.
The 2017 Jenny Dawn Cellars Pinot Noir pairs well with Mushroom and Truffle Oil Pizza, Beef and Horseradish Crostini, Mini Beef Wellingtons and Beef Carpaccio.
There are a few opportunities to taste the 2017 Pinot Noir and Chardonnary before the release date in November. The Jenny Dawn Cellars team will be attending Vine at Botanica on September 7, 2018 and Zoobilee at the Sedgwick County Zoo on September 8, 2018 in Wichita, KS. Tickets are still available for both of these events. Make sure to attend, stop by our booth and enjoy our newest wine creations!
